A Very Long Engagement

Too often I get subjected to a movie that tries to overwhelm me with special effects or other forms of trickery in order to cover up the fact that it contains no real story. This is the second time I've seen this movie. The first was in a little independent cinema with really uncomfortable seats. Now, with the comfort of my own couch, I could relax and enjoy a beautiful story unfold. See, this movie doesn't just tell you one story. It tells you the story of the minor characters that the herione meets on her journey. This is not a movie for the attention-span deprived. If you think you can handle a story told deliberately, you must see this movie.

Mathilde and Manech are childhood sweethearts, who shortly after their engagement are separated when Manech must leave to fight on the frontlines during World War I. She receives notice three years later that he was killed in action. But she doesn't believe it, because if he died, she would know. Thus starts her journey to uncover what really happened out there. And it's soooooooo fantastic. Some of the best cinematography you'll ever see, and the music is just heartbreaking.

All right, that's enough from me. It's a great movie.
